Podcast #56: Joao Cortesao - Climate-Responsive Urban Design, Adaptation and Research Through Design
The companion blog post to the podcast episode
Joao is an architect and Assistant Professor at Wageningen University, Netherlands. His research focuses on climate-responsive urban design and climate adaptation using a research-through-design approach. His motivation is to create and transfer design knowledge to practitioners and decision-makers, in order to prompt the adaptation of urban areas to climate change.
In this episode talk about his research on designing cooling urban environments with water and vegetation, running design workshops with architects in Egypt to spark locally-specific climate adaptation measures and bridging the gap between research and practice.Â
This episode is full of practical and actionable advice!

Climate-Responsive Design Workshop in Cairo, Egypt
Below are some photos of the workshop Joao led with colleagues on climate adaptation measures in Cairo. See full Linkedin post.
Cooling Urban Water Environments
Joao’s research on cooling urban water environments resulted in practical design principles for reducing temperatures in urban space. Below is a good visual representation of some of these. Read more here.
These principles are coming to life in a real project in a city in the Netherlands called Breda. Below are the visuals of how this will look. Read about it here.
This project also includes a design toolbox of interventions - see below.
