Career advice for moving into a sustainability role
Oh hi there,
Are you a traditionally-trained architect or planner trying to move into a role more focused on sustainability? It can be hard to know how to make the transition especially if you can’t commit to retraining or the job market is not ideal.
My latest guest on the Green Urbanist podcast has some great advice for you! In the episode Valentina Petrone recounts her journey from architect to circular economy consultant and finally into her role as a sustainability manager in state government.
Here is some of the career advice she has for others:
Start with your strengths and passions: write down your existing skills and areas of interest.
Research sustainability job opportunities to see what matches your current experience, skills and interests. Also take note of the gaps in your experience and knowledge.
Find some online training to fill the gaps in your knowledge. (Read on below for my recommendation).
Embrace networking! Use Linkedin and local groups to get to know people working in sustainability. Don’t be afraid to reach out for advice and to build a professional relationship.
